Another year, another Oscars where everyone dresses boring and safe. I managed to barely put a list together this year, inspired mostly by my girl Rooney. This is graded on a strong curve. If anyone is missing from this list, they will be on Katie’s, which posts in an hour!
Note about after-party fashion: I have an event at work all week, so it will take me a few days to get that post up, especially without Red Carpet Fashion Critic to guide me to who was actually there.
Rooney’s back, y’all! The fabric of this Givenchy gown was so expensive-looking on TV, and I really like the yoke on the front. As usual, her lipstick and hair are A+++.
Saoirse and Calvin Klein is the best pairing. It’s like they joined forces for one night to make me really fucking happy. Saoirse, by the way, is delightful in interviews.
AND THESE EARRINGS:
This reminds me of something Barbra Streisand wore to the Oscars in 1970, and therefore it is wonderful. I adore when pregnant ladies go twee.
The shape of the top is a little too armor-like, but I think the skirt is really cool and her hair (LOVE the high pony), makeup and accessories are flawless.
Whenever someone is like, “I don’t know, French women aren’t very chic,” I will show them this and then say BOOM! and make finger guns. I would never think boob pockets and dyed pastel wedding shoes could look this good.
What I love most about this is how the straps widen at the top. It makes it a little more interesting. Sure, this look is a bit Princess Leia but at least it doesn’t bore me. Though it should be noted she could use a stronger lip color.
I also super love the back:
This half-cape is a nice take on the cape we have been seeing for the past few years. The color is great–no one was wearing anything this orange-y–and it fits her perfectly.
Hannah and Eddie Redmayne
I always look forward to what Hannah and Benedict Cumberbatch’s wife Sophie Hunter wear. She looks very elegant and her hair is giving me Dazed and Confused realness. He looks great, too, but he always does.
Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh
This is a little tame for them but they are adorable. I appreciate that they brought the modern and the rock and roll to this red carpet.
Katie texted me, “Charlize is wearing what she always wears but in red” and I didn’t even have to see the photo on Getty and I knew exactly what this looked like.
This definitely does not fit her right, and she usually dresses in livelier colors. Her face is stunning, though.
Jennifer Jason Leigh
This actually looks better in photos than it did on TV–it appeared a little droopy and sad. The color is beautiful and I think her makeup is also fantastic.
On the one hand, I like how classy and old school this is, but on the other… it doesn’t move me at all. Even her jewelry is an expected choice.
Very similar to JGar’s and equally as boring.
She is so gorgeous and this fits well, but the dirty dishwater color is NOT becoming on her (or probably anyone else).
I’m ok with simple gowns (see: my love of Calvin Klein), but she really needs wilder jewelry.
I’m not generally a fan of dresses like this, especially the nude lining. For some reason it reminds me of cake. I really want her to get a new stylist–I know I say this all the time, but it’s true.
70s ombre Versace nightgown is exactly who Heidi is, I guess.
A big fat no to that flower/bowtie thing. It’s tailored well but I still don’t like it.
