Last Saturday DC was jumping with celebrities attending the White House Correspondents Dinner –I was about 30 miles outside of the city on my mom’s couch watching re-runs of Ally McBeal (winner). Because Melissa and I can’t let an event in which people wear gowns go by here is our take on Saturday’s fashion.

If FLOTUS had walked the red carpet she would have been one of my best dressed, I love the silver chain mail and curly hair.

This is SO modern. -M

The YEAS have it!

Huma Abedin (political staffer)

I love this look, the color is fabulous, the cut is flattering, and that clutch is enviable. OH AND SHE WORE LIPSTICK AND IT’S FAB.

I don’t know if I love the ruching at the waist (I am anti-ruching) but that clutch needs to come home with me. -M

Troian Bellisario

I’m not sure who this person is but I dig her white Grecian inspired gown and gold belt. She also has a lovely face and nice hair.

Pretty and simple! Her makeup is wonderful and so natural looking–it’s ok to not wear lipstick when everything else looks so good. -M

Julie Bowen

I love the length of this dress. Her hair is also nice.

Do you think Julie and FLOTUS are friends? They have similar fashion taste and I love them both. -M

Connie Britton

Nice color and fit Tami Taylor!

WOW I love this color. Usually she is a bit bedazzled for me but I like the simplicity of this on her. -M

Sophia Bush

Sophia is also in a lovely color gown. She also gets points for lipstick and a bracelet.

Truly, she is one of my favorite people to see on a red carpet. I wish she would be in more stuff I watch so I could feel better about loving her clothes. -M

Lauren Cohan

I don’t know who Lauren is but I love her look. This is one of my favorite dresses of the event. The color is AMAZING.

She is on The Walking Dead, which neither of us watch, but everyone on the show has ended up in our fashion posts this year under Best Dressed. What is in the water at AMC? This is so spring-y! -M

Katie Couric and John Molner

Katie is wearing a really lovely pattern and she looks comfy and classy –WINNER.

I wish her clutch was yellow. The silver looks kind of sad on her. -M

Nukaaka Coster-Waldau and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

These two look fantastic and like they are enjoying themselves. I love the velvet collar of this dress and the purple tassel on her clutch.

While I can see right through her dress thanks to the lights, I LOVE it. It’s a little heavy for the season, though. -M

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox as usual looks FABULOUS. I wish more people wore grey.

Totally one of my top 3 from this event. She has never looked better–her body looks FABULOUS here! -M

Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart

His tux is a tad to tight in the jacket and a tad too short. Rebecca however looks really pretty in fuchsia.

Her face looks different and her clutch is too big. -M

Jenna Dewan-Tatum

BALLGOWN! I LOVE THIS. Her lipstick is also so fucking pretty. Lipstick is good people, lipstick is good.

She is so insanely gorgeous. I love when she goes full classy. -M

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda makes black trash bag fabric look amazing.

How does she still look this good? UGH. Hair is weird and doesn’t match the futuristic feeling of the dress. -M

Carla Gugino

Carla is also in a pattern and this is one case where I like the high/low hem. The only nitpick I have is that she either needs to cut down on the bronzer OR stop tanning.

I would like this better in a color, it would probably also make her skin look less orange. -M

Chanel Iman

FIERCE.

I usually don’t like models at these events but this is great. The color looks beautiful on her skin. -M

Gillian Jacobs

Gillian looks terrified. In ever picture Getty had she looked like this or like a robot. I wish she had been more comfortable because her dress is very different and super flattering.

Hey. it’s another of my favorites. This was custom made for her and it fits her personality and style so perfectly. I wish I didn’t hate Community so I could support her.  -M

Tea Leoni and Madeleine Albright

DUELING Sectary of States! Madeleine looks like she could thwap a person with that purse.

Katie is waiting for me to say it: I hate Tea Leoni. I find no reason for her. -M

Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir

OH these two are so precious (because of this I am overlooking their clothes –STOP WEARING HIGH WATERS).

He could do a skinny black pant that hit at the ankle and it would look better for this event. I love his crown. -M

Michelle Monaghan

I was really into Michelle’s hair. I also really love this column gown. It is modern and sparkly (Modern and Sparkly would be the title of Melissa and my memoir of friendship.)

HA I love that! I wish my hair looked half as good as hers. This is very event-appropriate. -M

Connie Nielsen

Connie is wearing a kaftan with a cape, it is everything I ever wanted. The color and earrings are also quite lovely.

If I owned this I would wear it everywhere, especially when I was giving a presentation at work. People take you seriously in a cape. -M

Naya Rivera

Naya was super classy and sexy and also very pregnant.

I don’t think the baggy sleeves are doing her any favors. -M

Gina Rodriguez

CAP SLEEVES! MAUVE! So pretty!

Another favorite! Gina has been killing it lately. DEEP V! -M

Tracee Ellis Ross

Bow down bitches this is the fucking best. Look how pretty her face is. Look at that cape.

I do not care for that weird sheer panel, it distracts from the amazingness that is a cape. -M

Gabourey Sidibe and Bailee Madison

I’m not loving Bailee but she and Gabourey were so playful and fun in all the photos I saw of them so BRAVA ladies.

Bailee’s dress is one of my LEAST favorites. So dated. -M

Cecily Strong

PURPLE. PATTERN. Good job Cecily!

When she was talking, this was giving her serious armpit cleave, so it must have shifted at some point. Here, it fits her beautifully. Cecily is super funny and I’m glad Katie inserted the gif of that joke up top. -M

I vote MEH!

(This should totally be a thing a person can choose while voting. NO I don’t like either white dude I’m MEH. If MEH wins we get a re-vote and neither candidate can run again.)

Megan Boone

Everything about Megan Boone is meh. I can’t even get excited about the length. I guess I dig her shoes.

I like her makeup and the straps are interesting? That’s all I got. -M

Juju Chang

Juju whoever did your make-up should be fired because the dress, jewlery, and hair are great and then your face is so meh. Also I still love you Juju!!!

I love that Juju is showing some cleave. -M

Ashley Judd

This kind of pains me because I really want to love the dress but I think the slit is a bit much and the flower is just insane.

Why did she dress for a luau? Was there a Hawaiian theme to this event literally NO ONE else knew about? Because of that, I find this kooky and charming but also so not right for the event. -M

Lucy Liu

This is great I just put her in meh cause I expect more from Lucy.

Yeah, she is usually modern and a bit different. Boo. -M

Brit Marling

Here is the thing about Brit Marling, she is a great writer but bland as an actress. I also find her clothing choices kind of bland too. Everything about this look is sad, her hair and ruffles are limp, and her dress is so pretty but it’s all so LIMP. Also The East would have been so much better had Ellen Page played Marling’s part.

I agree with that casting switch, Brit Marling was just there. Even Taylor Schilling has learned to do more with that type of outsider part on OITNB. Anyway, I would like this dress on someone else because she brings NO life to it whatsoever. Dianna Agron? -M

Maria Menounos

WEAR LIPSTICK! I am also over this dress. I feel like we have seen it or some version of it enough.

So boring. Stop wearing this dress, ladies. -M

Idina Menzel

BRIDESMAID! Also I am super confused by the hair.

That fabric… just NO. -M

Darby Stanchfield

Anther high/low hem I don’t mind but her hair is super tight and very severe.

I love the bow on this! That’s about the only nice thing I can say. -M

Chrissy Teigen

I used to love Chrissy’s fashion sense but lately she has been very same old, same old.

She needs a new stylist and maybe to take some tips from Kim K. (I never thought I’d say this) and try some more minimal clothes in neutral colors. She would look more 2015 than 2005. -M

Ivanka Trump

At first I thought this was Sofia Vergara. I’m over the mermaid tail.

Even Sofia Vergara does this better. -M

Constance Zimmer

Constance Zimmer put your leg back in your dress you are someplace classy and you are wearing sleeves.

I always liked her! The sleeve length is unusual and I like it very much! -M

NAY you shouldn’t!

Candice Crawford

This is the WORST in the high/low hem.

SO cheap-looking. Like worse than the JCP collection by Duro Olowu. Worse than if Peter Pilotto did a collection for Target. -M

Kelly Rutherford

Stop wearing sacks famous people.

When you put your hands on your hips because you feel fat because you are wearing a sack, you should probably wear something else. To wear a sack you have to own it. -M

Martha Stewart

Oh Martha you and Juju went to the same make-up artist. This dress is supposed to be flattering when in reality it is the opposite.  It is not a good thing.

Ugh the shape is so strange. She looks like an upside down triangle. -M

Donald and Melania Trump

Melania’s dress is so mother of the bride circa 1979 and her husband just adds to the effect.

I hate the Donald but I like Melania’s dress! Wouldn’t it be great on a Mara? -M

  1. That opening clip is fabulous. Hilarious, but then not because it’s true. And so many great gowns on a variety of women!

Huma Abedin has mastered the art of looking furious and depressed at the same time but if Anthony Weiner were my husband I’d look the same way. I feel bad every time I see a picture of her.
