Smart ladies love movies, the week in trailers, June 2, 2014

Movie Trailer Mondays

Each week I review movie trailers that came out the previous week or for movies that are about to premiere. Some of these movies I am excited about, some I am mildly curious about, and the rest I make fun of!

Notable movies coming out this week

Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt fight in the same war over and over again. It’s like a super depressing Groundhog Day. [The fact that this movie is getting really good reviews makes me worry for humanity. -M]

The Big Ask, is out onDemand and for Rent

Awkward indie dramedy starring SLLS faves Gillian Jacobs, Jason Ritter, and fellow VCU alumni Zachary Knighton about a dude who wants to sleep with all his friends when his mom dies of cancer –see AWKWARD. [I was watching this trailer, thinking, you know what this movie needs? DALE DICKEY! And there she is in the credits! A true miracle. Anyway if this was about a girl wanting to sleep with her friends’ boyfriends (or girlfriends), it would totally not have been made. -M]

Movies I can’t wait to see in an ACTUAL theater

The Hundred-Foot Journey, August 8, 2014

This is exactly the kind of feel good film I love, basically it has to be directed by Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Chocolat, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen to name a few) and/or co-star food (I saw Chef the other week and it was FABULOUS). [I hope we can see this when I’m visiting for ROBYN because you know I won’t be able to get my husband to go. -M]

This Is Where I Leave You, September 12, 2014

I love all of the people in this dysfunctional family dramedy but I was burned before with the Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams catastrophe of The Family Stone so I am super excited and super scared. [I might be the only person who loved The Family Stone. PAUL SCHNEIDER. This is Where I Leave You is based on a beloved contemporary book, but I think I would like the movie better because Tina Fey and my boyfriend Adam Driver are in it. -M]

I won’t go to an ACTUAL theater but will pay for it on Amazon

Kill the Messenger, October 10, 2014

Jeremy Renner as a journalist against the government. The cast of this movie makes me more interested in it than the story which I feel like I have seen a million times over. [I agree, I’ve seen this a million times but never starring Jeremy Renner and that insane Iron Man facial hair that’s blocking his hotness. FACT: I will see anything with Oliver Platt. -M]

You would have to PAY me to see it in an ACTUAL theater

A Walk Among the Tombstones, September 19, 2014

Remember when Liam Neeson made good movies like Schindler’s List and Kinsey? REMEMBER? This movie also stars a thin brunette Dan Stevens, this movie does not look worthy of leaving Downton Abbey. I’m not sure what it wants to be as it has a lot of tropes, drugs, crimes against women, haunted ex-cop now hired brute, graveyards, weird loners who collect birds, and so much more. [I blame Taken for causing Liam Neeson’s decline. I know this is based on a book but NO WOMEN speak in this trailer. There are three glimpses: a nostalgic look at Dan Stevens’ wife, one with electrical tape over her mouth and another who waves creepily. Please, Hollywood, no one wants to see movies where only (white) men speak. -M]
