Smart ladies love movies, this week in trailers, August 17, 2015

Movie Trailer Monday

Each week I review movie trailers that came out the previous week or for movies that are about to premiere. Some of these movies I am excited about, some I am mildly curious about, and the rest I make fun of!

Notable movies coming out this weekend

American Ultra

I am going to watch the shit out of this on Netflix. Good job Kristen Stewart for being delightful in the press for this movie while also calling out the press for being assclowns. [I hope that American Ultra will live up to its trailer, which is dumb, funny and exciting all at once. This is totally a future HBO favorite. -M]

People Places Things, is out onDemand and for Rent

Melissa and PJ covered this movie when I was on vacation and now it’s my turn. This movie looks super cute and if Melissa was visiting soon I would suggest this and the Chris Evan’s directorial debut movie Before We Go with Alice Eve as a double feature (after we watch Diana and Grace of Monaco both on Netflix and Ishtar on Encore onDemand). [This trailer still makes me giggle! Jemaine Clement is a treasure and I like that we are now making quirky dad movies–I feel like all men I know aspire to be dads like him. -M]

Movies I can’t wait to see in an ACTUAL theater

Trumbo, November 6, 2015

This Bryan Cranston Oscar-bait (let’s all get super stoked were officially in prestige movie trailer season) biography of Dalton Trumbo looks super fun (especially compared to last years biography Oscar-bait films, i.e. The Imitation Game and Theory of Everything). Also Louis C.K. is a delight in everything. [One, when I see the name of the movie, I keep thinking this is about current Seattle Mariners outfielder Mark Trumbo. Two, I don’t care if this is Oscar-bait, it looks funny and charming and I LOVE real life stories, especially ones that remind me of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. -M]

The Hateful Eight, January 8, 2016

Walton Goggins was BORN for Quentin Tarantino’s dialogue. This movie is going to RULE. [Is this going to make Walton Goggins a movie star? I hope so. The rest of the cast is ALSO fantastic and this is the most Coenesque movie Tarantino’s ever made. I will not be able to wait until January. -M]

I won’t go to an ACTUAL theater but will pay for it on Amazon

Burnt, October 23, 2015

There was a time that I loved Bradley Cooper, and it was when he stared in Kitchen Confidential on Fox (which was cancelled too fucking soon) so I’m kind of intrigued by this movie where he is a chef except he comes off as a cocky asshole whose fall from grace gives him a heart of gold (a part I wish he would stop playing) –here’s hoping that’s the editing. This movie also stars a bunch of people we love, like Emma Thompson and Alicia Vikander. [I am confused about the backstory–why do people want to kill him? He’s a chef! What could he possibly run from? Whatever, Top Chef is the only reality show I still watch so there’s no way I will miss Burnt. -M]

You would have to PAY me to see it in an ACTUAL theater

Jem and the Holograms, October 23, 2015

What in all that is holy have they done to SYNERGY?!? This abomination has done more damage to beloved childhood cartoons than SUPER MARIO BROTHERS (John Leguizamo was genius casting for Luigi)! [John Leguizamo is all over this post!! I remain WAY MORE EXCITED about this crap than Katie, but I love shitty movies. I am not sure what Synergy is for, though. It plays home movies? I thought it helped transform Jerrica into Jem. I didn’t really watch the cartoon so I don’t care that it is different but when you introduce a cool robot that had such a specific purpose in the original cartoon, but instead of being magical it’s just a DVD player, I will question your ability to write a screenplay, RYAN LANDELS. -M]

A reminder of cartoon Synergy. [No joke, this song is less than two minutes long, but it feels like ten. -M]

And finally bonus Mario Brothers –so so bad but again better than stupid Jem.
