Smart ladies love rad music, future 2013 releases

Now that it’s 2013, it seems everybody is looking forward to the next twelve months of pop culture. Looking at cursory lists makes my head explode with anticipation. Here are some records coming out this year that I am really excited about.

Everything coming out on Merge

William Tyler

Merge Records never lets me down, and with releases this year from William Tyler, Mount Moriah, Reigning Sound, Arcade Fire and others, this year is going to be truly wonderful for the label that continues to surprise me.

Veronica Falls, Waiting for Something to Happen

Their self-titled debut from 2011 is already one of my favorites of all time and last year’s “My Heart Beats” 7″ proved the band could still write super catchy singalong pop songs. I’m nervous that WfStH will not be as memorable, but “Teenage” does assuage some of my fears.

Widowspeak, Almanac

The first Widowspeak LP kind of came out of nowhere for me–the sound is so different from other Captured Tracks bands, as they’re more Mazzy Star than My Bloody Valentine. And how great is this album cover? I have to have this on LP so I can have the full size version.

Frightened Rabbit, Pedestrian Verse

Frightened Rabbit

I had a very intimate relationship with The Winter of Mixed Drinks, and State Hospital EP, the band’s first release for Atlantic, seems to have some of the magic missing from their previous work. But I will hold out for Verse, since the EP was songs that didn’t make the album cut. I’m weary, but hoping that the band puts out another record to score my evenings spent baking and studying.

The Knife, Shaking the Habitual

There has not been a new Knife album in over six years (though Karin Dreijer Andersson put out an LP under the name Fever Ray in 2009), and the Internet is already abuzz with excitement over Shaking. Their work the past years has shifted from Scandinavian electropop to something much darker and colder, but still listenable.

The Low Branches, 100 Years Old

The Low Branches

My friend Christina is such a wonderful songwriter of spare, beautiful music and I am really excited to hear her new record and go to the album release show this month. My husband did the photography for 100 Years Old, a series of Polaroid and digital photos. I took the photo above at The Listening Room in November.

There’s also new music from Devendra Banhart, Danny Brown, Beach Fossils, My Bloody Valentine (!!??!!) and a ton of bands I haven’t heard of yet. What 2013 release are YOU most looking forward to?
