There is no question that Grimes’ Visions is going to end up on my list of favorite records of 2012. It’s catchy, beautiful electronic music. I think Claire Boucher is a genius on the level of Karin Dreijer Andersson (Fever Ray/The Knife). I love that she is daring, unusual and is involved in all parts of the creative process (art/directing/looping/etc).
While I appreciate the video for “Genesis” is steeped in modern culture, like Britney Spears and Quentin Tarantino, I just can’t shake the feeling that Claire is incredibly pretentious. This is a woman who built a houseboat with her ex boyfriend and tried to travel from Minneapolis to New Orleans to experience a Huck Finn-style adventure, but never left Minnesota due to the boat being impounded. Katie, there’s even an graphic detailing the journey! [I do love info graphics! -K]
It seems like one of Stefon’s routines. “L.A.’s hottest club is Dry! Promoter Shitt Romney has thought of everything: dancing trios in the desert, sour-faced Lady Gaga impersonators, Britney Spears’ old snake, roadside flares, limo parties full of freaks, hats that say PUSSY on them, and flaming swords.”
She gave a great interview to Pitchfork yesterday about directing the video. This only made the whole thing seem more pretentious to me. She discusses meeting muse Brooke Candy & never once mentions what this girl ACTUALLY DOES–artist? writer? desk jockey? TELL ME, CLAIRE! I’m thinking that if I have answers I will learn to love this video. Cause really, the song is fucking amazing.
