Smart ladies love to ask WTF, Lady Gaga “Applause” video

I appreciate Lady Gaga’s weird videos and her bizarre marketing choices, like appearing on Gossip Girl. Even some of her music isn’t completely awful. “Applause,” the first single from ARTPOP, is definitely not a good song, but the video is fascinating and (my favorite!) highly gif-able.

Here’s one verse that makes me think, she totally gets it:
I’ve overheard your theory “nostalgia’s for geeks”
I guess sir, if you say so, some of us just like to read
One second I’m a Koons, then suddenly the Koons is me
Pop culture was in art, now art’s in pop culture in me

Then she blows it on the dumb-as-fuck chorus:
I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause
Live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause

Now that is some Katy Perry shit. I would rather listen to One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” on repeat (BTW, SLLS is totally on board with the Niall-Ellie Goulding pairing. Those boys love the old ladies!). Actually there is one part of “Applause” that sounds exactly like Grimes, which Claire should take as a huge compliment since she is (IMHO) a more important contemporary artist than Gaga at this moment.

Even though this video has only been out for 24 hours the internet is rife with well thought-out analysis of the symbolism and images in the video. This post will not be like that because, well, if you think too hard about Lady Gaga the world itself loses all meaning. Instead, let’s find some hidden themes in these seemingly random images stuffed together, hmmm?

Boobs/divas

This is one of the most mesmerizing gifs I’ve ever seen. It also makes Gaga look like Mariah Carey which I think is completely intentional.

I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for but you get the idea.

This is obviously a reference to Janet Jackson.

Gaga loves her some 90s pop divas.

Lady Gaga is in the Illuminati

One of my favorite secret hobbies is watching You Tube videos that accuse famous people of being in the Illuminati. I even watched one on Dappy once.

Anyway, there is so much out there that says Lady Gaga is Illuminati and this circle eye thing isn’t helping since that’s totally an Illuminati symbol:

ETA: The world agrees with me and I am not totally crazy.

She goes wig-less!

I wonder if this is her real hair, it is really cute:

I almost wish she looked like this all the time. I know this goes against who she is–chameleon, artist, pretentious asshole–but she’s so pretty! Plus, I dig the CRAZY EYES!!

I wish I had been able to prepare for this moment. It is so utterly horrifying. A talking singing animal that resembles a puppet? NO THANK YOU.

  1. You’re a lunatic. Total lunatic. I’ve been a lead guitarist for almost 15 years, playing everything from Megadeth, to Steve Vai, to Joe Satriani. I was a music teacher for over a year. I don’t care what you THINK you know, but you could never touch or grasp my musical knowledge or capabilities-

That being said, the Applause song IS good. Your whole basis on whether a song is good or not is obviously based on the lyrics. I don’t see you describing ANYTHING musical. What you’re describing is your extremely amateur and ridiculous opinion on something you don’t know the first thing about: MUSIC.

How about you take some music appreciation courses, or maybe some kind of lessons, and LEARN ABOUT MUSIC BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR DUMB FUCKING MOUTH.

I haven’t smacked my head this hard from looking at complete idiocy and ignorance in my entire life. Everything written here is idiocy, complete ignorance, and borders being fucking RETARDED.

Do the world a favor and keep your opinions to yourself and get an education.

    • Your white male privilege is showing.
Smart ladies do not make assumptions about anyone’s educational background. We also think different opinions are fun and sometimes a springboard for intelligent discussion.
Also, SLLS is a hate speech-free zone.
      Thanks for reading!

      • Nah, I don’t know that dude. But he’s right. I don’t agree with the anger of his post, nor the swearing, but I understand his frustration, because I felt it too while reading your blog post. It’s because you don’t say anything ‘smart’ (pun intended) about the music. I’ve been playing the guitar for almost 20 years now (all kinds of genres) and went to a lot of concerts, including Megadeth and Satriani. Analyzed a lot of music, their structures, their harmonies. I am good at hearing nuances and different layers in music. And after hearing Gaga’s song, I have to say: the composition is very good. The dynamics, the pace, the interesting layers, different styles of singing she applies. It’s contemporary, yet unique. Furthermore, you’re judgemental about the lyrics. Perhaps Gaga has written lyrics that are deep and clever, and mixed them with a chorus that is easy to sing along to. That’s actually a very good move. Gaga gets to express herself, while still appealing to the masses and making a buck. Btw, I hate it when people use their wm privilege. But in this case, I do not think it’s a matter of privilege, since I’m not a wm.

        • There are some things I need to say.
          1. This blog post is a joke.
          2. I think this song is terrible and I am allowed to say that because, last time I checked, having opinions is legal. You also won’t be able to change my opinion about “Applause.” I watched the video twenty times and still can’t remember a melody.
          3. Why does everyone think I can’t play an instrument or don’t know anything about music because I don’t like this song? Please do not make assumptions about me.
          4. I would recommend everyone who writes essay-length comments on SLLS to get their own blog. Do it, it’s fun!

    • You sound like somebody who takes them selfs way too seriously. Do the world a favor, step away from the computer. And stop name dropping ! Loserrrr

    • “You’re a lunatic. Total lunatic. I’ve been a lead guitarist for almost 15 years, playing everything from Megadeth, to Steve Vai, to Joe Satriani. I was a music teacher for over a year. The music is absolutely average and from yesteryear.

  2. Melissa’s commentary isn’t fueled on hate, but you’ve given us a fine example of what that looks like. Pretty sure Gaga would bend you over her knee for this one, Son. I would encourage you to take your Mother Monster’s advice below and learn to respect differences of opinion.

“Sending threats of any kind, using hateful or abusive language, and the provoking of others on the internet is not supported by me or anything that I stand for.

I know how angry you feel sometimes, and I know that when they say things about me you feel that they are saying them about you as well. But music is about love, and is about sharing in the magic of theater. Although pop culture and society have become more negative and critical of the artist over the years, by engaging in this negativity you are allowing it to spread.

I ask you to take a pledge with me to continue the change toward positivity, and to recognize that this behavior is wrong. We are stronger than this. We know what we stand for, and what we stand for is bravery. I know this because what I see on the internet is not what I see at my shows. People deal with their insecurities in many different ways. The anonymous nature of social media has made it easy for many to vent their anger by bullying others with no recourse or accountability. But this is not a healthy way to handle your emotions.” – Lady Gaga
