I am not a fan of the Matrix movies, but I am a huge fan of Lana Wachowski, who directed them with her brother Andy. Lana, who previously hid from the media and reveled in her anonymity, now feels that, as a transgendered woman, she has a responsibility to the other members of the LGBT community to come out and discuss her experiences.
I was so moved by this video, where Lana won the Human Rights Campaign Visibility award. Her speech is funny and sweet; switching between her personal experiences (people calling her “Laaa—” as they are not comfortable with her identity) to her right-on analysis of the spectrum of sexuality.
What most struck me was how comfortable she was talking in front of an audience–she’s so animated, and is a fantastic speaker. I hope that this inspires her to continue to speak publicly. Please watch the video if you have some time. It’s embedded below, or you can click over to Jezebel.
