Smart ladies love awards shows, our Golden Globe picks

Melissa’s Picks

TV

Best Television Series- Drama

Breaking Bad Cranston

This category is utter and total bullshit since Mad Men isn’t included and The Newsroom is. I didn’t like Downton season 2 as much as 1 (or even 3), I still haven’t seen Homeland season 2 and I’m still stuck on episode eight of Boardwalk Empire. Therefore my pick goes to Breaking Bad, a show which I have never seen, but plan to watch in 2013. I love you, Bryan Cranston!

Best Performance by an Actress-Drama

Connie Britton, forever robbed for Friday Night Lights, is an absolute fucking delight on Nashville. I have loved her ever since The Brothers McMullen, so I am cheering for her.

Best Performance by an Actor-Drama

Since this is the only category Mad Men is in, I pick Jon Hamm. I loved seeing Don on “love leave” and kind of fail at his job a little. Plus every scene he did with Joan or Peggy was perfect.

Best Television Series- Comedy or Musical

UGH SMASH. Anyway, this is clearly Girls. Lena Dunham created something fresh and exciting with this show, which should be on HBO for as long as she wants.

Best Performance by an Actress- Comedy or Musical

Julia Louis Dreyfus Veep

I really feel like all of these ladies could/should win. Lena was so revealing and charming; Amy Poehler made her character’s political journey so heartwarming;, Tina Fey has been kicking ass this last season of 30 Rock (I LOVE Liz and Criss); and Zooey helped make Jess less of a manic pixie dream girl and more of a real woman with struggles who just happens to have a fabulous wardrobe. I know this is a safe pick, but I thought Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a tour de force on Veep. I have seen the series twice and she still makes me laugh as a Vice President who is a little fucked up, has a potty mouth and is kind of unsure of her role in the presidency.

Best Performance by an Actor- Comedy or Musical

Louis CK

I think Louie should definitely be a contender for best show, but since it’s not, Louis C.K. will do. Once I heard Rosie O’Donnell do an interview about how comedians can do everything, because comedy is harder for serious actors do to well. Louis C.K. imbues his sad character with comedy and drama in one of the most original shows I have ever seen.

Best Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

The Hour

Have you seen The Girl? It is awful. I will of course pick The Hour, a fun and smart British series about newspeople in the 50s who dress well and romance each other that is so far from one of my least favorite shows of the year that is also about TV news, The Newsroom.

Best Actress- Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

No Romola Garai from The Hour, so I pick Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin in Game Change because I saw Boogie Nights again recently and I think it’s terrible she doesn’t have an Oscar.

Best Actor- Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

No Ben Whishaw (seriously HFP the people in The Hour are amazing), so I will choose Benedict Cumberbatch, even though I have only seen three episodes of Sherlock (I need more time!!!). I love that he’s an total asshole who does not know how to talk to people but he’s also a fucking genius so you have to love him.

Best Supporting Actress- Series, Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

I hate this category, it’s hard to compare Maggie Smith to Sofia Vergara. I just want SLLS fave Sarah Paulson to give a cute speech and be adorable.

Best Supporting Actress- Series, Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

Mandy Patinkin Homeland

Mandy Patinkin’s beard on Homeland.

Movies

I am still catching up here!

Best Motion Picture- Drama

I have only seen Lincoln, plus it was filmed in my city, so I pick that. Maybe this means James Spader will be at the GG? [It is total crap that The Master was not nominated.]

Best Performance by an Actress- Drama

Jessica Chastain Zero Dark Thirty

Jessica Chastain looks like she plays a badass bitch in Zero Dark Thirty, so I want her to win!

Best Performance by an Actor- Drama

uw_12537_lgresize21

DDL was great, but I was aware of him at all times. And even though John Hawkes is a fox, my favorite is Joaquin Phoenix.  Joaquin was so subtle and inside his head and I thought his performance was one of the best I have ever seen.

Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical

I have seen zero of these movies, so I’m a little lost. Moonrise Kingdom? Wes Anderson is great. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen? Katie loved it so I know I will like it. Les Mis? Ehhhhh. Silver Linings Playbook? It looks like something I’d like. Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? I AM NOT EIGHTY FIVE. [NOTE: Katie & I are watching Moonrise Kingdom this weekend so because it’s the only one I will see by Sunday, and because 21 Jump Street was not nominated, I will choose that.]

Best Performance by an Actress- Comedy or Musical

Again, I’ve seen none of these but who doesn’t want Emily Blunt to win something? She is so stylish, is a good comedic actress, and has a super cute husband.

Best Performance by an Actor- Comedy or Musical

Jack Black Bernie

OK, I am pleading my case for Jack Black here. I saw Bernie a few weeks ago (it’s on Netflix Instant!) and his performance blew me away. He has never played a character like this and I think Black did a FANTASTIC job. Plus his speech would be so funny.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actress

I’m glad that Helen Hunt is back, but Amy Adams gave such a quiet and moving performance in The Master. Like Julianne Moore, it is an absolute travesty that she doesn’t have an Oscar.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor

Lincoln Best Supporting

All of these people have too many awards already. I pick James Spader in Lincoln, even though he wasn’t nominated. All of the men in the photo above are deserving.

Best Director

Ben Affleck wants this the most, give it to him HFP!

Best Foreign Language Film

A Royal Affair–I watched the trailer and this is BY FAR the movie I would like the best.

Best Animated Film

Rise of the Guardians

Rise of the Guardians? I hate animated movies. I WOULD love a feature-length Adventure Time, though.

Best Screenplay

Please give Quentin something, he works so hard.

Best Score

I don’t care but I’m going to go with the Cloud Atlas people as I love Lana Wachowski.

Best Original Song

Adele

Les Mis, Jon Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban? I’ll go with Adele.

Katie’s Picks

TV

Best Television Series- Drama

downton-abbey-season2pressrelease

Downton Abbey, I loved season 2 but I did watch soap operas from about age two to 28 so I’m a sucker for a guy suddenly getting over a spinal cord injury.  Also I agree whole heartily with Melissa when she says this category doesn’t even count with out Mad Men.

Best Performance by an Actress-Drama

American_Horror_Story_Connie_Britton_960x540

Connie Britton, always and forever.  I love you Tami Taylor!!!

Best Performance by an Actor-Drama

Jon Hamm cause he is handsome and terrific as Don Draper.

Best Television Series- Comedy or Musical

UMMMMM…The Big Bang Theory?!? Bitches if you do not put up say oh The New Girl or um Happy Endings then I just look at this category as WTF?  Though I’m sure people are happy about Girls.  I would have even preferred Glee over Smash, Glee which SUCKED last season was better than SMASH!

Best Performance by an Actress- Comedy or Musical

Nobody swears like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and we all know how much I like SWEARS!!!

Best Performance by an Actor- Comedy or Musical

Matt LeBlanc because he is so so fucking good that it has literally changed how I watch Friends (I don’t really know how to explain it but it’s a fact).

Best Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai and Dominic West from The Hour model clothes

The Hour it’s the only one I watched.  Ben Whishaw is so hot.  Go see Brightstar he is amazing as Keats plus the clothes and cinematography are lovely.

BONUS BEN PIC...see DREAMY!!!

BONUS BEN PIC…see DREAMY!!!

Best Actress- Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

20100312_JMoore_ATWT5_500x338_0

Julianne Moore because she is amazing and has been since As the World Turns (ATWT I miss you so much!!!!).  I also love that she was never embarrassed about being on ATWT in fact when it was ending she totally made a visit to Oakdale as Frannie Hughes (she also played her long lost Irish twin sister Sabrina and NO I did not have to look that shit up it’s all up there in the noggin forever.  Meg Ryan was Betsy wife of Steve on ATWT but she was TOO high and mighty to make a return in it’s final few months, for shame Meg Ryan for shame!).

Best Actor- Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

Benedict-in-Sherlock-benedict-cumberbatch-14550644-632-348

Benedict Cumberbatch ALWAYS!!!

Best Supporting Actress- Series, Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

Ummmmm….I’m going with the Dowager Countess just cause it’s hilarious that her ladyship is up against that tart Juliette Barnes!

Best Supporting Actress- Series, Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie

Mandy Patinkin you dreamboat in a beard, you!

Movies

Best Motion Picture- Drama

I have seen three of the five, how did that happen.  I’m going with Lincoln because I think the acting was phenomenal   Argo was more fun and Life of Pi was beautiful as thoughts on the other two films I saw in this category.

Best Performance by an Actress- Drama

I have seen none of these movies but I’m going to give it to Jessica Chastain.  I think she has the most momentum and that in the end the Oscar is either going to her or Jennifer Lawrence (they split the categories up between Drama and Comedy at the Globes).

Best Performance by an Actor- Drama

lincoln-daniel-day-lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis because he is the greatest ever.  Melissa picked Joaquin Phoenix, but he is one of those people I hate for no real reason (I did like him in Walk the Line but I think that has to do with the bright and shiny Reese Witherspoon allure).  I also can’t watch The Master cause the movie trailer creeps me out and I have no idea why, Melissa really liked it so if the trailer doesn’t creep you out she recommends it.

Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical

moonrise-kingdom-international-poster

I have seen two of the five movies (Moonrise Kingdom and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen).  I think Les Mis will win but I’m going Moonrise Kingdom cause that movie was lovely.  Incidentally Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a MUCH better film then the title lets on, I truly enjoyed it!

Best Performance by an Actress- Comedy or Musical

MERYL STREEP…not really but she will give the best speech.  I’m so happy about all the Salmon Fishing in the Yemen love but I’m going with Katniss Everdeen FTW!!!

Best Performance by an Actor- Comedy or Musical

salmon_fishing_in_the_yemen_emily_blunt_ewan_mcgregor_2

Ewan McGregor or Hugh Jackman, both hot, both boyfriends of mine.  Also does anyone else get an extremely douchy vibe off Bradley Cooper, like ALWAYS?  I rewatched Alias about a year ago and was shocked at how douchy he is even when playing a nice guy it’s like i feel that everything he does has a hidden douchy agenda to it. [He is terrible! I did like a CBS Sunday Morning interview with him when he went back to Philly. GO PHILS! -M]

Best Performance by a Supporting Actress

Melissa went Amy Adams, so I’m going Anne Hathaway because she makes everything better much like Amy Adams (you should see The Muppets, people, it’s adorable) so both should be appreciated here.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor

Alan Arkin won me over the moment he uttered “Ar-go fuck yourself”…WINNER!!!

Best Director

Melissa went Affleck and I think every other person has one except Tarantino so I’ll go Quentin, I do love him so.  Affleck did an amazing job with Argo and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi just might be one of the most visually beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Best Foreign Language Film

Kon-Tiki cause I loves me the title.

Best Animated Film

mov-brave_320

BRAVE FTW!  I will do everything in my power to get Melissa to watch this movie, it is beautiful and full of so much emotion and it’s so fucking feminist it kills me!!!

Best Screenplay

Tony Kushner, I love him!

Best Score

life-of-pi2

Mychael Danna, Life of Pi because of the nature of the movie both visuals and music/sound had to be amazing to pull it off.  I also want to add that the acting in Life of Pi was also amazing and in another year without such big movies like Lincoln or Les Mis it might be the frontrunner in many of these award categories.

Best Original Song

Adele!  Really is there any other way to go…Act of Valor, REALLY?  Wasn’t that the two hour Navy Seal commercial movie.
