Smart ladies love TV, our 2012 Emmy picks

Melissa’s Picks

Comedy Series

Girls is an achievement in modern television. I hope Lena Dunham wins a bunch of the technical/writing awards too.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation. Leslie broke up with Ben so she could run for city council, got back together with him and had to face a judge, had one of the best campaigns I’ve witnessed (real OR TV) and beat rich boy Paul Rudd in a very tight race.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Louis C.K., Louie. I am a huge fan of Louis CK’s comedy and I love how he brings the naturalistic elements of stand-up to his show. It’s not broad or laugh out loud funny which will probably mean he loses to Alec Baldwin.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie. I have only seen one season of this show but I couldn’t bring myself to pick any of the other nominees. Merritt is the bright spot of that show, the opposite of crazytown Edie Falco.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Max Greenfield, The New Girl. I still prefer Jake Johnson, but Schmidt, the breakout character, gave Greenfield so many funny lines and situations.

Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

Maya Rudolph, SNL. Her episode was one of my favorites this season and Beyonce and Jay-Z receiving visitors for Blue Ivy still makes me laugh.

Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

Jimmy Fallon, SNL. Usually I don’t pick two SNL hosts but I loved Fallon’s episode too.

Drama Series

Mad Men. I love Game of Thrones too, but this season of Mad Men was so well done. Peggy’s awakening, Roger’s acid trip, Joan’s divorce, Layne’s suicide, Don’s newlywed blues…

Mad Men Season 5

No one does iconic like the geniuses behind Mad Men…

Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Elizabeth Moss, Mad Men. I was so proud of her leaving SCDP and moving on and getting what she deserves. She is exploring who she is and it’s been really wonderful to watch.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Jon Hamm, Mad Men. I don’t watch the other shows except Downton so this might be by default. So much of what Don goes through happens beneath the surface. Mad Men doesn’t tell you everything, especially about Don, so Hamm really plays the character beautifully.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Christina Hendricks, Mad Men. She had so many good scenes to play this year–the one in the bar with Don gave me chills. She did some questionable things and Hendricks did not make Joan out as a villain or a victim, but as a woman who did what she needed to get by.

Joan Harris Mad Men

Joan doing whatever she has to do…

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Jared Harris, Mad Men. It’s a MM year! Sometimes Layne got these weird little vignettes, like the story about the stolen wallet, and Harris made Layne so sad and lonely instead of creepy. I am devastated he will not be on the show any more.

Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Martha Plimpton, The Good Wife. Patti Nyholm is such a fun character and since Martha was not nominated for her work on the very fantastic Raising Hope, she at least deserves this.

Guest Actor in a Drama Series

Jeremy Davies, Justified. It’s my favorite drama’s only nomination and it’s well-deserved. In other hands, Dickie could have been a pesky common criminal but Davies makes him so likeable and charming.

Jeremy Davies

It was hard to get an image of Davies from Justified not wearing an orange jumpsuit…enjoy the trucker hat!!!

TV Miniseries or Movie

I have not seen any of these but I pick Hemingway and Gellhorn because I loved that story even before it was made into a  movie.

Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Connie Britton, American Horror Story. Just because she fucking rules.

Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Idris Elba, Luther. He’s the hottest nominee.

Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Sarah Paulson, Game Change. Again, I didn’t see this (I have some catching up to do!), but I am a huge fan of Sarah Paulson.

Sarah Paulson Game Change

I am assuming she is playing a lady Republican or a square…

Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie Series

David Straithairn, Hemingway and Gellhorn. He plays John Dos Passos? Eff yeah!

Katie’s Picks

Comedy Series

Why is The New Girl not on this list?  I pick The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) cause it is the most consistently funny comedy on this list that I watch (I have seen at least one episode of each Comedy but I only watch TBBT, 30 Rock, and Modern Family).

The Big Bang Theory

The entire cast looking so cute…

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

How is Martha Plimpton not on the list (I have a feeling this will be how I start all of these picks)?  Zooey Deschanel because of how much I love The New Girl.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Louis C.K. because I love him.  I sadly have only seen one episode of Louie (I forget about FX) but it was hilarious.  I do love Jim Parsons but he has already won.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Mayim Bialik because she has brought new life into TBBT.  I would have also liked Melissa Rouch to have been nominated too.  The two of them have given Penny something to do other than be a straight man to the boys and have made her a more well-rounded character.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Max Greenfield should win everything!!!

Schmidt The New Girl

Max Greenfield and Zooey Deschanel looking adorable…

Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

Dot-Marie Jones because Coach Beiste was the only thing I liked about Glee last year until they made Coot an abusive husband.  Why couldn’t you make Coach Beiste have a happy marriage Ryan Murphy?

Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

UMMMMM…Will Arnett as Devon Banks cause I LOVE HIM!!!

Drama Series

I can’t choose, it’s between Mad Men, Downton Abbey (I don’t care what you people think about season 2), and Game of Thrones.  I would hate to compare this to a Holocaust movie where a women must choose between her two children but it’s totally like Sophie’s Choice, y’all!!!

Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Elisabeth Moss, when Peggy left SCDP I sobbed because it was so powerful.  This is her fucking year!!!

Elisabeth Moss Mad Men

Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Jon Hamm, if he doesn’t win an Emmy for Don Draper it will be a travesty.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

I love everyone in this category except Anna Gunn as I do not watch Breaking Bad.  The Dowager Countess is a treasure, poor sad maid Anna, badasses Kalinda Sharma and Diane Lockhart, and Joan Holloway Harris are each amazing women.  If I had to choose though it would be Christina Hendricks.  I may not agree with everything Joanie does but Hendricks always makes sure we know why she does the things she does.  It’s so much more about the acting with Joan than the writing.

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Tyrion Lannister is the only real adult in Game of Thrones.  Peter Dinklage  makes sure viewer knows that Tyrion thinks through all of his actions and takes responsibility for them.

Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Martha Plimpton because she is amazing as Patti Nyholm on The Good Wife.

Guest Actor in a Drama Series

Michael J. Fox on The Good Wife is always a pleasure (seriously this show has the best guest stars).

Martha Plimpton and Michael J Fox on The Good Wife

Peggy an Louis about to fuck shit up for Alicia and Co.

TV Miniseries or Movie

Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia is the only one I have seen (I seriously need to watch Luther) but regardless I would have picked it.  I am a huge fan of Stephan Moffat the creator of Sherlock since he did Coupling.  He is also the current show runner for Doctor Who.  He is an incredible writer who can write in any genre.  I highly recommend the 6 episodes of Sherlock.

Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Connie Briton because she is amazing and should have one an Emmy as Tami Taylor on Friday Night Lights.

Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing as Sherlock Holmes (I feel bad for Jonny Lee miller who will be compared to Cumberbatch for as long as Elementary is on TV).  Seriously you should all watch Sherlock if only to smugly compare it to Elementary all Fall.

Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Sarah Paulson cause I have not seen any of these and I am a huge Paulson fan.

Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie Series

Martin Freeman!  Look at all the Sherlock love.  It’s on Netflix go watch it now!!!

See how adorable they are together…WATCH THIS SHOW PLEASE!!!
